books like, ancient Egypt which is a book that talked about the history of ancient Egypt, and I also read books that talked about mummy. Those kinds of books are all content Ramesses II. I also browse the internet, see if there website that discuss Ramesses II. However, internet sources seems very easy to obtain, I have to check if the article has creditability or has the author name on it.
There are many data that I could take as references, due to my research is about a famous pharaoh and died thousand years ago. Therefore, I could use the secondary information when I doing my research writing. Since I will use the secondary information, I will not use statistical techniques like questionnaire to assist my research paper. And I do not plan to set up a mainly quantitative or qualitative study. I would use the information that I could collect as much as possible to do my research writing paper.
I also use blog to track what I have done, it could remind you how your work go and how would your work be like in the future.

Literature Review

If someone mentioned about Ancient Egypt, what might jump up your thoughts? Pyramids would be one of them, or the magnificent temples, moreover those scary mummies. There is one element missing above, without this element, pyramid would never built, those great temples would not shown in front of visitors, mummies would not possible made and became a kind of well-known pieces. This important element is “Pharaoh.” Ramesses II was one of the famous pharaohs in Ancient Egypt history.
In Ancient Egypt, king was not the most powerful and important status but pharaoh. The word “Pharaoh” was originally came from “great house” (per-ao) which means the palace where he lived. In other words, pharaoh was indicating a respectful way to the king. The status of pharaoh was regard as a god instead of a human being. In order to become a pharaoh, a prince has to be trained by an effective system which content not only physically but also mentally. Physically, a pharaoh has to become an expert sportsman and potential war leader. (James, 1988) Egypt was a strong and rich empire at that period of time, countries which nearby all wanted to invade. Therefore, as a leader and a head of a great empire, pharaoh has to know how to fight, how to make a right decision in order to win.
There are two main reasons that Ramesses II attracted scholars’ interest; first, Ramesses II has a great reputation in the history and second, Ramesses II built a vast of magnificent temples and impressive obelisks. Some of these temples have huge war reliefs on the wall which were fought with Near Eastern empire. One famous battle was Ramesses II fought in person, and fought valiantly. This scene was well documented on the wall of the temples that Ramesses II built, moreover, Ramesses II soon acquired the reputation as a hero. (Romer, 1973) After this heroic battle, Ramesses II not only gained a reputation as a hero but also firmly made people believed that he was the one, the Amon’s son which was assigned. It was a very important thought for Egyptians, unlike Akhenaten, the former pharaoh of the new kingdom, was banished by people. Akhenaten overthrows the old ways of worshiping gods but one god—sun god and this idea was detested by people. Thus, it is pretty hard to find a complete statue of Akhenaten’s face; most of them were destroyed by Egyptian later.
Ramesses II was tall, his height was over 6 foot, slender, and also known for his hook nose. (Stevens, 1963) In general, ancient Egyptians were short, about 5 feet 3 inches. (Putnam, 1993) From Ramesses II’s appearances, he looked very much like a god-king. Ramesses II got others do not have, like his height, body conditions, and handsome appearances all showed that he might do something great for Egypt.
After the coronation of Ramesses II, he took boat and sailed along the Nile River from Abu Simbel. He came down with rising flood represented himself brought the life-giving water to his people. Ramesses II also paid his respect to Amon which was the highest priest at Thebes. Moreover, from Thebes he sailed down to Delta to show his majestic to Egyptian. At the fifth years of Ramesses II’s reign, Hittie Empire pounced toward Egypt. Ramesses II had his army ready, twenty thousand soldiers and charioteers and those soldiers divided into four divisions of five thousand men each. Several years past, these two armies from fought each other to holdup, and then these two countries signed the first national Treaty of peace after the long-drawn-out conflict. (Payne, 1981) Ramesses II represented Egypt to sign this national Treaty with Hittie, this Treaty not only first time for Egypt but also for national. It was a big step and a milestone at that period of time. This National Peace Treaty is still remain in the Abu Simbel temple.
Ramesses II built a lot of giant status and magnificent obelisks to tell people how grandness he was. For example, the Karnak temple in Luxor, the columns are more than 21.3 meters in height and more than 1.2 meters in diameter. Another famous example is the Abu Simbel Temple, four enormous statues sitting in front of the temple. (Shaw, 1973) Those status and obelisks were all shaped by whole rocks not pieces to pieces. If I use a standard man to measure how big those status are, one male adult could sit cozily in Ramesses II’s one side of ear at Abu Simbel temple.
Ramesses II was not only married with Nerfertary, who was the most favorite by Ramesses II, but also the princess of Hittie. Furthermore, Ramesses II married his four own daughters. He has more than one hundred children and at least fifty of them were boys. Ramesses II loved Nerfertary the most and willing to show how beautiful Nefertary was. Ramesses II built the most loveliness mausoleum for Nefertary in the valley of Queen. (Menu, 2003) This was the controversial part of Ramesses II, how come he would marry his own daughter and not only one of them but four. It might probably an acceptable behavior for Pharaoh; especially this pharaoh did so many great things for Egypt Empire. In contrast, married with their own children considered “incest” in this modern society. What Ramesses II did might have something that could not reveal on the table but it was really an inappropriate behavior for us.

Most of the data that I collected mainly talked about Ramesses II’s long reign, and the big family he had. Also, the numbers of temples and statues built in his period. The temples were painted some pictures and the statues were exaggerated big in order to honor and show the importance of the pharaoh. Ramesses II signed the first International Treaty with Hittie Empire; this was the pioneering work at that period of time.

Introduction---draft(I think my introduction was a rubbish..~><~)

Introduction

Looking back to world civilizations, we should proud of ourselves as being a Chinese. The reason is that our culture and civilization have been existed for about five thousand years and yet not even close to disappear. A civilization means people were well developed and among people “leadership” is necessary.
If you look over Chinese history, you might find out that there were many famous emperors, some were good, and some were bad. This is the way which is just like any other countries in the world. Despite the good emperors or bad dictators, they all share one thing in common, construction. In order to let people remember them, they would build something remarkable, something different, and something that could represent the emperor himself. Just like “The lighthouse of Alexandria,” one of the seven wonders of ancient world, which was built by Alexandria’s commander Ptolemy Soter, for offspring to memorize Alexandria. Moreover, “The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus” is another example for an emperor who wants to be remembered only this construction was a tomb.
As I mentioned about “tomb”, it might remind you that there is another very famous wonder that still stand on the Giza plateau. Yes! The great pyramid of Giza. Man fears time, yet time fears the pyramids (Arab proverb). Ancient Egyptian used their talent to build those beautiful and incredible pyramids to honor pharaohs. Ancient Egyptian wisdom was well developed, like mathematics, metallurgy, cooper and iron extraction and glass making. Furthermore, the technologies of making mummy, the technique of constructing the temples and the philosophy of after life were the most advance than any other countries at ancient period.
During ancient Egyptian civilization period, there was a great pharaoh, whose name is Ramesses II. Ramesses II carried forward the technique of constructing the temples to peak. Ramesses II ruled Egypt for 67 years; it was the record that a Pharaoh could rein this long period, ever. We might discover the excellence that we can learn from his leadership. Ramesses II represented the greatest Pharaoh in the ancient Egypt for 67 years. Not only archaeologists study about Ramesses II but also writers wrote stories about him. I am interested in Egyptian culture for a long time, and found there are several books that wrote by Christian Jacq, a writer, a professor, and also known as an Egypt historian. Since then, I started to notice this famous pharaoh in ancient Egypt.
Therefore, I decided to find more things about Ramesses II by myself. I divided Ramesses II’s story into four parts, background, accomplishments, influences, and controversy. Read along my paper, maybe the other way to honor Ramesses II.

proposal

Proposal

A Great Pharaoh in the history of ancient Egypt---Ramesses II.

1.	Introduction

Most of people do not know many things about Egypt do not even mention Ramesses II, a great Pharaoh of ancient Egypt. A great pharaoh would definitely influence his people, but how? Pharaohs would do something to honor the status, like build the temples or giant statues or even the pyramids, but which were build by which pharaoh, people always feel confuse. Also, there were lots of fairy tales that still remain in Egypt, just like Chinese fairy tales that are still taught to children. Through the fairy tales of a certain pharaoh, people might understand better. Once people get power and become famous, no matter how many good things he or she has done, there must have rumors started, furthermore a Pharaoh. People referred pharaoh as a king of a country, is it really so? These two titles really share the same status? There are few pretty famous pharaohs in the history of ancient Egypt, why Ramesses II got the most attention from world? Ramesses II ruled Egypt for 67 years; it was the record that a Pharaoh could rein this long period, ever. We might discover the excellence that we can learn. Since then, I started to notice this famous pharaoh in ancient Egypt.
Several issues could be bringing out from my research problem, like Tutankhmon, another famous pharaoh of ancient Egypt. What makes Tutankhmon so famous? Another controversial pharaoh, Akhenaten, whose statues were destroyed and the name were erased.

2.	Literature review

3.	Purpose of the study

Ramesses II represented the greatest Pharaoh in the ancient Egypt for 67 years. How come there were no other pharaohs could compete with him? I would like to study Ramesses II more deeply instead of reading other people’s articles. In addition, I would like to share my study with others who interested in Egyptian culture as well.

4.	Research design

5.	Expected outcomes

I hope that I could find out something that I did not know when I read the books about Ramesses II, Egypt at beginning. Furthermore, I would like to find out the good characters of Ramesses II and learn from it.

6.	Timeline

Time	Research stages
11/17	Proposal developed
11/24	Literature review again
12/1	Data collection
12/30	Writing up
I hope I could finish the first draft by the end of this semester. And collect as much information as I can as well.

Romer, J.
